How it's calculated
Full stacks are the item count divided by the stack size, rounded down; the leftover is whatever doesn't fill a complete stack. Stacks needed rounds the same division up, since a partial stack still takes a full inventory slot. Containers needed then divides that stack count by the container's slot count (27 for a shulker box or single chest, 54 for a double chest), rounded up.
Worked example: 1,500 items
1,500 items at a 64-item stack size make 23 full stacks with 28 left over -- 24 stacks needed in total once you round up for that partial one. That fits in 1 shulker box(es) (24 stacks in the last one), or 1 double chest(s). Enter 1,500 into the calculator above to reproduce these exact numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do only some items stack to 16 instead of 64?
It's a fixed property of each item, not a setting -- a handful of items (ender pearls, eggs, snowballs, most signs, and a few others) cap at 16 per stack for game-balance reasons, while the great majority of blocks and items stack to 64. Unstackable items (most tools, armor, and anything enchanted or with durability) cap at 1.
How many slots does a shulker box actually have?
27 -- the same as a single chest. The advantage of a shulker box isn't more slots, it's that it keeps its contents when broken and can be carried in your inventory or ender chest, unlike a chest.
What's the difference between a single and double chest for storage math?
A double chest (two single chests placed side by side) has 54 slots, exactly twice a single chest's 27 -- this calculator applies that directly when you switch container types.
Does this calculator account for partially-full stacks I already have?
No -- it assumes you're starting from a plain item count and calculating stacks and containers from scratch. If you already have partial stacks in an inventory, subtract what's already stacked before entering the remaining raw item count here.
